Greetings from NYC

Hey All - Jason and Mike here, coming to you from the big apple, NYC.

Jason here, we are in the city to attend the CMJ music marathon, a music festival and conference much like SXSW. We have both been attending and speaking on panels. It has been informational and educational. A whole conference full of musicians and music business people trying to figure out how to survive the collapse of the music industry. People debating whether this is a revolution or a renaissance or the demise. The good news is it all comes down to the music, and no matter how much talk there is about, copyright infringement, branded entertainment, sponsorship, endorsement, social networking(ala, twitter—love it—myspace, facebook, ilike, lala, etc) file transfer, gig trades, record deals, publishing companies, and mp3s, we will still be writing, recording, releasing and performing music. I am hopeful that you will all keep listening. Mike what have you learned so far?

I don’t know if I have been living under a rock or I am just too old to be in touch with “college” music but I don’t recognize more than about 1% of the bands that are playing the conference. We decided to take a chance and just head out there and see what we could find. So far the winner for Nadas favorite new band goes to The Real Ones. www.therealones.com. They are from Norway and blew us away. Cheers to The Real Ones! Welcome to America. I am very sad I have to miss the premier of Kevin Smith’s new film starring Seth Rogan called ‘Zack and Miri Make A Porno.’ Yep, it’s about a couple who home make adult naughty movies. Should be rauchtastic. Oh well, maybe I will see it in the theatre. We are missing it tonight because we are playing at The Alphabet Lounge at 7:30. If you don’t have a CMJ badge you can’t get in. We didn’t know this until now. So to make up for it, if you want to hang out afterwards twitter Jason (@thenadas) or email mike@thenadas.com. We also play tomorrow at 5 pm at Rockwood Music Hall. Same deal.

Jason again . . . we are here through Sat. morning. I am posting updates throughout the conference on twitter.com/thenadas they are also on the twitter section thenadas.com.

Saturday we head to Chicago. We play at the Beat Kitchen. It has been a while since we have played in the city of Chicago. We would love to see all of you Chicagoans at the show. Next week . . . Fineline in Minneapolis. Finally!

Oh, and before we forget, be sure to grab this week’s Authentic Records Weekly Ear Snack. It’s a track called I Won’t Tell You from The Heroes. Mike highly recommends it.

That’s all for now, back to discovering new southern rock/bluegrass with a splash of sitar Norwegian bands.

Love and Jergen,
The Nadas

QOTW - What is the best new band you have discovered?

Well, the band isn’t new, but they are to me. GREAT BIG SEA is out of Newfoundland, Canada. I guess they sell out large arenas in their native homeland, but play much smaller venues here. They are sort of a rock, folk, Celtic sound and are really good. I just saw them at The Paramount a couple of weeks ago.
